COUNCIL OF ASIA PACIFIC FURNITURE ASSOCIATION 21st　 DIRECTOR'S　 MEETING on 4th MARCH, 2005 BANGKOK, THAILANDSECRETARIAT REPORT (l) 15th anniversary celebration and 9th director's inaugural ceremony of IFHK International Furniture & Decoration(Hong Kong) Association(IFHK) grandly celebrated 15th anniversary and 9th director's inaugural ceremony in Kowloon HK on 2 1st February,2005. Mr. Jack Chen, chairman of CAPFA, was invited to join the grand meeting and awarded the congratulation medal to Mr. Chan Man the 9th chairman of IFHK and general manager of fortune furniture Ltd.,. Mr. Jack Chen wished IFHK a successful future and hoped they could formally as be CAPFA member as soon as possible. (2) New year's greeting and celebration party of TFMA Taiwan Furniture Manufacturers' Association(TFMA) held New year's greeting and celebration party in Daliansan Town, Dongguan city of China on 25th February,2005. There were more than 500 VIP of furniture enterprises and manufacturers in China ' HK and Taiwan to join the party. First of al1, Mr. Fred Chen, chairman of TFMA, highly appreciated everyone's support for antidumping issue, especially Mr. Samuel Kuo, chief officer of Production & Manufacturer committee, who contributed best efforts on this event.
By the way, Mr. Fred Chen also sincerely invited CAPFA members to visit Taipei Intemational Fumiture Show(TIFS) that will be presented on 1 5th to 1 8th March,2006 and hold CAPFA meeting at the same time in Taipei,Taiwan Mr. Jack Chen, chairman of CAPFA, also promised to push this trip and wished a outstanding presentation in TIFS. (3) CAPFA website transfer CAPFA Secretariat would like to transfer the website management to Taiwan for updating information in time. In the meantime, Magfield Technology Sdn. Bhd that was responsible for CAPFA website has sold its business to EMERGE Systems (M) Sdn Bhd. By the way, we also got the fax dated 26th February,2005 as attached from MFIC to mention the website transfer event. So we would like to have your suggestions for the matter. (4) Visiting activity in Dalian China CAPFA secretariat was glad to get the contact from Mr. Li Qiong,chairman of Dalian Furniture Association in P.R.China, who is pleased to invite again CAPFA members to attend Dalian furniture fair on 28th to 3lst May,2005. After the confirmation for the schedule, he will keep in close touch with Mr.Paul Keng, chief officer of trade & marketing committee, to co-organize the trip. (5) Participation of Japanese Furniture Manufacturers Group in imm2005 Cologne Messe Period: January 27th to 23rd, 2005 Exhibitors from Japan (4 companies): Aizu Kiri (Paulownia) Tansu Co., Ltd. (Fukushima Prefecture) Karimoku Inc. (Aichi Prefecture) Morishige Co., Ltd. (Kagawa Prefecture) Shirakawa Corporation (Gifu Prefecture) Total Size of the Booth: 200 square meter The background of our participation: According to the history of this association, Japan exported about 4,800 Million Yen of wooden furniture and 5 ,300 Million Yen of metaI furniture in 1970s which was much bigger than the present export amount. However, that famous "Plaza Accord" of 1985 brought Japan very high appreciation to yen currency, that is, the exchange rate of US$ I = \240 in 1957 was suddenly changed to US$ I = \120 after this accord. Many furniture manufacturers and exporters are now reviewing that their export was almost destroyed by this high appreciation of yen currency. Since that time, the import of furniture increased year by year however the export was moving just sideways . Import of 1900 was increased to 2. 17 times in 2003, and the comparison between export and import is about I :5 In order to improve this large imbalance of furniture trade, our association established Export Promotion Committee in October 2002, and some furniture manufacturers are now eager to develop their business in international market. The reaction of the imm2005 participation: The exhibitors have obtained so many inquiries especially from European countries and all of them are satisfied with the result of the fair at this moment. The problem is how to embody these inquiries into business. Outlook after the fair After the fair, the furniture was taken by a large scaled furniture sales shop in northern Germany and the display will start at around end of March or April 2005.
