MIFF2006 is event marks the 12th anniversary of the MIFF series of exhibitions with the official opening ceremony to be officiated by the honourable YAB Dato' Sri Najib Tun Abdul Razak, the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia at the Pan Pacific Ballroom 7 March at 3 p.m.
A new milestone in the expansion of MIFF begins that day. "For over a decade, we have traditionally showcased Malaysian and International furniture at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC). Now covering 70,000 square metres, MIFF has expanded to include the impressive new Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre(KLCC) which supplements PWTC as a strategic venue," said Dato' Tan Chin Huat, MIFF Chairman and Managing Director.

This year, there is a total of 440 exhibitors from 1 7 countries and regions spread over 11 halls, in the PWTC, and 5 halls in KLCC, respectively. "We are expecting a 5 to 6 percent increase in the number of international buyers compared to the 6899 visitors from 128 countries last year," said Dato' Tan. This 5 day fair is a substantial contributor to the MICE industry of the nation. Attracting an increasing number of visitors each year, it creates an economic spin-oft of RM25 million for many related industries, coupled with generating more than USD 550 million in export sales. MIFF plays an important role in facilitating the tourism industry and promoting Malaysia as well. As such, many MIFF visitors return to Malaysia as tourists or to meet their business partners."

At present MIFF is the biggest furniture show in the region and has attracted, over the years, international visitors from more than 120 countries. With the new expansion, the numbers are expected to surpass previous years. With more than 400 exhibitors from Malaysia and from 12 other countries, MIFF holds an exclusive place among the leading 10 global furniture exhibitions in the world.

"As part of our commitment to be an effective service provider to all our guests and international visitors," added Dato' Tan, "a new service has been included for MIFF 2006. With the new venue at KLCC, there will be a non-stop shuttle service which will run between KLCC and PWTC. As a premier regional exhibition, we strongly believe in excellent customer service, thus we have the responsibility to accommodate the needs of international exhibitors and visitors to ensure that Malaysia upholds its name as a destination of excellence".

The success of MIFF acting as a prominent export platform has facilitated the Malaysian furniture industry in terms of export earnings for the industry, significantly contributing to the export earnings of the nation as a whole. As such, sales generated at MIFF have consistently accounted for approximately 30%-40% of the nation's annual furniture exports.

"MIFF is proud to contribute significantly as a platform for Malaysian furniture manufacturers and facilitate in making Malaysia a giobal player in the international furniture arena. The marked improvements in Malaysian furniture quality and designs over the years are also attributable to the increased standards of Malaysian furniture manufacturing. Malaysian furniture exports have seen a steady increase annually and I foresee this trend continuing in the future."

In addition, Dato' Tan said that the Malaysian furniture sector was set to grow in size due to a strengthening demand for quality furniture worldwide. Malaysia exported around RM7 billion worth of furniture last year compared to RM6.3 billion in 2004. Malaysian furniture exports are expected to surpass RM7 billion this year. To achieve such targets, it will require the Malaysian turfaiture industry to maintain their competitive edge.

"The design element is inevitable in manufacturing furniture products. We need to move into other market segments and this requires manufacturers to enhance their design skills and capabilities to keep abreast of global trends. Complementing this. MIFF plays a role in organising competitions to encourage designers and emphasis design excellence in furniture. In light of this, image enhancement will be extended towards Malaysian products and the furniture industry which will improve export performance," concluded Dato' Tan.
